In an effort to make Erdenheim Farm as sustainable as possible, we are making compost from the wastes generated on the farm. All of the manure and bedding from our various animals including chickens, sheep, cows, donkeys, and horeses, is mixed with any plant debris that comes from our gardens and landscaping. The piles that result from all of this material are organized into long, narrow ‘windrows’ which are then managed using state of the art composting technology. Our compost windrow turner is pulled by a tractor alongside the windrow and simultaneously mixes and aerates the entire pile which also adding water to it. Our finished compost is a wondeful, weed free source of organic matter that we use to amend the soil in our crop fields and vegetable beds.
